Welcome to Where You Are PT. We understand that pelvic floor dysfunction can be uncomfortable to discuss, which is why we've compiled the most common questions we hear from patients in Oxford, MS and throughout Lafayette County. Whether you're experiencing incontinence, pelvic pain, or simply want to learn more about how pelvic floor therapy could help you, you'll find helpful answers below. Dr. Meg Cochran, DPT is dedicated to providing compassionate, evidence-based care with the convenience of in-home and clinic-based treatment options.

What is pelvic floor therapy?

Pelvic floor therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy that focuses on the muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues in the pelvic region. These muscles support your bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs. At Where You Are PT in Oxford, MS, Dr. Meg Cochran, DPT uses evidence-based techniques to address pelvic floor dysfunction through strengthening, relaxation, and coordination exercises.

Pelvic floor therapy can help with incontinence, pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction, and post-childbirth recovery. Unlike general physical therapy, pelvic floor therapy requires specialized training and certification, which our therapist brings to every patient interaction.

How do I know if I need pelvic floor PT?

You may benefit from pelvic floor therapy if you experience:

• Urinary or fecal incontinence
• Frequent urination or incomplete bladder emptying
• Pelvic pain during or after intercourse
• Pain during menstruation
• Lower back pain or hip pain
• Constipation or difficulty with bowel movements
• Weakness in the pelvic muscles

In Oxford, MS and surrounding areas, Dr. Meg Cochran can evaluate your symptoms and determine if pelvic floor therapy is appropriate. Many people don't realize their symptoms are related to pelvic floor dysfunction and could be effectively treated with specialized physical therapy. If you're unsure, schedule a free consultation to discuss your concerns.

What happens during a pelvic floor therapy session?

Your first session includes a comprehensive assessment of your medical history, symptoms, and functional goals. Dr. Meg Cochran performs an internal and external pelvic floor assessment to evaluate muscle tone, strength, and coordination. This helps establish a baseline and informs your personalized treatment plan.

Subsequent sessions include targeted exercises to address your specific issues, manual therapy techniques, biofeedback training, and home exercise programming. Sessions typically last 45-60 minutes. At Where You Are PT, Dr. Meg brings everything needed directly to your home throughout Oxford, Lafayette County, and surrounding areas — so you can receive treatment in the comfort and privacy of your own space.

You'll learn techniques that you can practice independently between sessions, which is crucial for achieving lasting results.

Does pelvic floor therapy hurt?

Pelvic floor therapy should not be painful. Dr. Meg Cochran at Where You Are PT prioritizes your comfort throughout treatment. Some people experience mild discomfort during the initial assessment as we evaluate your muscles, but this is temporary and typically minimal.

Actual treatment focuses on gentle, therapeutic techniques that gradually improve strength and function without causing pain. If you have a history of trauma or significant pain sensitivity, we discuss modifications to ensure your experience is comfortable and safe. Communication is key—if anything feels uncomfortable, please let us know so we can adjust our approach immediately.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on your condition, severity of symptoms, and how you respond to treatment. Some people see significant improvement in 6-8 sessions, while others may need 12-16 sessions or more.

During your initial evaluation, Dr. Meg Cochran will provide an estimated timeline based on your specific situation. Factors affecting duration include symptom severity, how consistently you perform home exercises, and your body's natural healing process. We monitor your progress closely and adjust the treatment plan as needed to ensure you're moving toward your goals effectively.

Do you accept insurance?

Where You Are PT is a cash-pay practice, which means no insurance limitations on how many sessions you can have or what treatments are covered. This gives Dr. Meg complete freedom to treat you based on what you actually need — not what an insurance company approves.

We provide superbills after each visit that you can submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Many patients get a portion of their costs back this way. We also accept HSA/FSA cards. An initial evaluation is $275 (90 minutes, in-home), and care plans start at $75/month. Contact us at (662) 832-1790 or meg.cochran@proton.me for more details.

What should I wear to a pelvic floor therapy session?

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that you can easily remove from the waist down for your assessment and treatment. Many patients wear athletic wear, sweatpants, or loose clothing that allows easy access.

You'll have privacy during your session, and Dr. Meg Cochran maintains professional draping practices. For in-home sessions at your Oxford, MS location, you'll have the additional comfort of being in your familiar environment. Don't wear anything constrictive that might affect blood flow to the pelvic region. Comfort and accessibility are key.

Can men benefit from pelvic floor therapy?

Absolutely. Men experience pelvic floor dysfunction just as women do. Men may benefit from pelvic floor therapy for post-prostatectomy incontinence, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, pelvic pain, and lower back pain.

Dr. Meg Cochran provides specialized care for male patients at Where You Are PT. Many men don't realize their symptoms could be treated with pelvic floor physical therapy, or they feel uncomfortable seeking help.
